Upon selection, students become UROP Fellows and continuing students present their project at the UC Irvine Undergraduate Research Symposium in May after receiving their award.
As a UROP Fellow, students develop valuable academic, personal, and career readiness skills. They also receive the following UROP Fellow benefits:
- One free research poster per project per academic year
- Graduation cord for recognition at UCI Commencement
- Use of UROP Fellow title for recognition on Resume, CV, LinkedIn, and graduate school applications
- Access to UROP Fellow resources and community
- Exclusive opportunity to apply for the UROP Travel or Publication Award, which is limited to UROP Fellows
Students who need support for project-related supplies in order to complete their project may apply for needs-based funding of up to $500 as part of the REF application. Average funded awards typically range from $250-$400.
Fall 2025 Deadline:

Step 1: Are You Eligible?
- All applicants must be enrolled at UCI as degree-seeking undergraduate students through at least winter quarter 2026
- Must have UCI Academic Senate Faculty Mentor guidance
- Must be in good academic standing (2.0+ GPA)
- Applicants may apply as an individual or a group
- All REF recipients who are enrolled at UCI in spring quarter 2026 must present at the UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium in May 2026. You will need to register to present your project separately from this application, in spring 2026.
Funding Eligibility (if requesting funding)
Due to limited funding available, we prioritize supporting investigator-initiated research over class and club projects.
-
- Students enrolled in independent research units (e.g. 197, 199, Honors, etc.) or those whose project is not affiliated with a class or club may apply for needs-based funding for project-related supplies.
- Students enrolled in other classes or clubs are not eligible to apply for funding. Students in these situations may still apply for a non-funded REF award, and should refer to their home school for guidance on financial support.
- Maximum of one individual funding request. Students may also be part of one or more group projects requesting funding.
- Maximum amount of funding request is $500. Please only request the amount you need from UROP to complete your project that is not available from other sources.
- Students may apply for a project that has been funded in the past, but the proposal must be updated to include work that has already been completed on the project, likely including changes to the introduction, timeline and budget, among other areas.
Step 2: Prepare Your Application
First, review the Research Experience Fellowship (REF) Application Guide.
Your application must include:
- Proposal
- Personal Statement
- Faculty Mentor Agreement

Interdisciplinary Research Teams
UROP has partnered with CALIT2’s IRT program to support interdisciplinary projects, by teams consisting of one PhD graduate student and two to four undergraduate students, from January to May 2026. CALIT2 will provide a $1,000 stipend to each PhD graduate student (pending CALIT2 budget administrative staff confirmation) serving as a mentor for the team; plus up to $2,000 for project supplies, as needed for the project. All teams are required to present their projects in person and submit a final report by the end of spring quarter 2026.
Graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to work collaboratively, bringing their interests and experience from multiple disciplines to solve problems through an interdisciplinary lens. Active mentoring from a faculty advisor is considered a plus for the project to be selected. Preference will be given to projects that are experiential in nature, and mentored by CALIT2 faculty, or faculty who want to get involved with CALIT2.
IMPORTANT: Funding for research-related expenses is not transferred to departments or provided to students directly. Graduate student leads must submit purchase orders for supplies to CALIT2, who will make all purchases. All projects should be completed and funding must be expended by the end of May 2026.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is a research fellowship for UC Irvine undergraduate students. It is aimed at students with some prior research experience who plan to continue an intensive, faculty mentored research experience over the summer. The fellowships are typically for 10 weeks, with a commitment of 20 hours per week. However, the total time commitment is flexible and should be appropriate for the proposed project. The award amounts are expected to be $1,500. This award is a stipend given to the student via their ZotAccount in support of their time and effort. UROP Fellows who will be enrolled in spring quarter 2026 are required to present their project at the Undergraduate Research Symposium in May 2026.
Financial Aid Students: Note that if you are enrolled in UCI Summer Session, a SURP award will apply to your financial aid award for summer. If you are not enrolled in UCI Summer Session, a SURP award will apply to your financial aid for the 2025-26 academic year. Please refer to the UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to learn more details about how your individual financial aid award will be affected.

Travel or Publication Award
Eligible UROP Fellows who need partial funding for travel or publication expenses may apply for a UROP Travel or Publication Award. UROP Fellows are UCI undergraduate students who have received a non-funded or funded REF, SURP, or IRT award.
Purpose: To assist with any of the following:
- Travel-related expenses for students who are presenting at a conference
- Travel-related expenses to go to a destination to conduct research or creative activities (e.g. archaeological dig in Arizona)
- Expenses related to publishing their research
Eligible UROP Fellows may apply for needs-based funding of up to $500. Awards typically range from $250 to $400. Due to limited funding availability, UROP awards are typically not enough to fully support a student’s activity expenses. In situations where multiple students are involved in the same project, UROP can only support up to $500 per project total. Applicants must show proof of acceptance to eligible activity at the time of application.
