What do you enjoy most about mentoring and working with undergraduate students?

When I first started directing, I was an undergraduate at UC Santa Cruz. It was my professors who opened up the world of directing to me, and I’m eternally grateful. Through their mentorship, I saw the potential for a real career as a theater director. I am who I am and have the career I do because of their inspiration. I love observing those revelatory moments in my students—when they recognize their potential, when they can envision a life in this field. I love seeing them dive into their work with fervor, commitment, and drive. I love watching them learn, grow, experiment, and discover. Working in the arts takes courage, and those who decide this is their path are some of the bravest people I know. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to mentor others as I was mentored as an undergraduate, to give back. And I’m proud to contribute to my field by bringing more directors into the fold.
