What advice would you give to your past self when you were just starting your research journey?
My innate immunity research project investigates the expression of a transmembrane protein hypothesized to facilitate the progression of chronic myeloid leukemia and aims to determine if a biochemical signaling pathway associated with this protein can be targeted as a treatment for this slow growing blood cancer. Being surrounded by a multitude of different kinds of research happening at UC Irvine led to my interest in getting involved, and I started working with my PI, Dr. Bohlson, my freshman year. My most meaningful growth came not being afraid of not knowing the answer which as taught me to be resilient, think critically, and ask questions. Beyond learning wet lab skills, I have also had opportunities to mentor peers, present my work at conferences, and apply what I have learned in the classroom to another scientific environment. I am so grateful for the mentorship I have received from Dr. Bohlson, and advise others to stay curious and stay engaged!
